One of the positive things about spending a lot of time on airplanes is the opportunity to engage in interesting reading one would not ordinarily pursue. After seeing a book review in the Wall Street Journal last October, I bought a copy of Paul Lockhart’s “Arithmetic,” which is this type of book. Having recently completed it, I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. Although the book contained much review, it was review from a new perspective. Devoid of the formulas so many of us were forced to memorize as kids, the modern approach to mathematical thinking contained within was a real treat to experience. I never new math could be this much fun! http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674972230
